Man in Ancient Garb Whipping a Naked Slave Girl

Here is the final unidentified movie still from the book. A man dressed as in Biblical times is whipping a naked woman that probably represents his slave. However, the action appears to be occurring on a stage, the woman appears to be wearing a merkin, and the man doesn’t seem to be using the whip seriously. This suggests that it is actually a cabaret act. Since the book was published in 1965, the film must predate this and so it is not from a mainstream American film. It is probably from a European movie (perhaps a “mondo” type film) or from an American “nudie-cutie.”

Japanese soldier overseeing the beating of a prisoner

Here is a film or TV still that I am trying to identify that was unlabeled in a book. The book was published in 1965, so the film/TV episode must definitely predate that. A Japanese soldier is in a room full of bound prisoners (They appear to be Filipino). He is overseeing the caning of one of them by a man that resembles actor Milton Reid, but I don’t think it’s him. I viewed the film The Camp on Blood Island in which he plays a Japanese executioner, and there is no such scene in it.

It may be from a Filipino film. There are several good candidates beginning with Outrages of the Orient (1948) (akas Sunset over Corregidor and Atrocities of Manila) and Beasts of the East (1948) Both of these films were re-edited and imported into the US in 1953. Then in 1959, they were re-edited and combined into a single, somewhat incomprehensible film titled Atrocities of the Orient. The former two films are available on a single DVD or download from Something Weird Video, however when I downloaded the films, I was disappointed to discover that Outrages just ended abruptly at 56 minutes without showing the end of the film. (Beasts of the East only ran 62 min., but at least it had a beginning and ending.) I did not see the scene depicted in the still in either of these movies. I have not seen the combo film, Atrocities of the Orient which is available from Amazon.com, but I doubt if the scene would be in that film, unless scenes were added.

I am aware of two more Filipino films that could be good candidates: Fort Santiago (1946) (aka Atrocities of Fort Santiago) and Blood of Bataan (1951). Unfortunately, I don’t think either of these films are available on DVD or download, unless some collector has a bootleg copy.

Trivia:  While researching this still, I learned that children’s book author Dr. Seuss wrote the screenplay for an Academy Award winning documentary called Design for Death (1947) which consisted of clips from confiscated Japanese films from WWII.

A man grabbing a woman lying in bed

Here is a film or TV still that I am trying to identify that was unlabeled in a book. The book was published in 1965, so the film/TV episode must definitely predate that. A man is grabbing a woman lying in bed, and he is apparently assaulting her. Unfortunately, you can’t see the man’s face at all and the woman’s face is seen at an unusual angle, so it is difficult to identify them.

Note that the picture appears as it was printed in the book and it may or may not have been reversed as if by a mirror.

Battle with Swords

Here is a film or TV still that I am trying to identify that was unlabeled in a book. I believe it is a swashbuckler set roughly in the 1600s. One man is stabbing another man who resembles actor Gilbert Roland, but I’m not positive that it really is him. It might be a pirate film, but an examination of the background will show that this particular scene occurs on land within the walls of a fortress. (Gilbert Roland appeared in both The Sea Hawk and Captain Kidd, but I have viewed both films and can rule them out.) The book was published in 1965, so the film/TV episode must definitely predate that. Note that the picture appears as it was printed in the book and it may or may not have been reversed as if by a mirror.

Three men carrying a trussed up old man

Here is a film or TV still that I am trying to identify that was unlabeled in a book. Three men in suits are carrying a trussed up old man. The book was published in 1965, so the film/TV episode must definitely predate that. (I have a feeling it is from the 1950s or early 1960s.) If you cannot identify the film, then perhaps you could identify one of the actors. Note that the picture appears as it was printed in the book and it may or may not have been reversed as if by a mirror.

Suffering Man held at gunpoint by 2 thugs

Here is a film or TV still that I am trying to identify that was unlabeled in a book. A suffering man is in the clutches of 2 thugs who are pointing handguns at him. The book was published in 1965, so the film must definitely predate that. (I have a feeling it is from the 1950s or early 1960s.) If you cannot identify the film, then perhaps you could identify one of the actors. Note that the picture appears as it was printed in the book and it may or may not have been reversed as if by a mirror.

Woman in Fishnet Stockings

Here is a film or TV still that I am trying to identify that was unlabeled in a book. A woman in fishnet stockings is sitting on the floor and attempting to protect herself with her raised arm. Only the legs of her assailant, presumably a man, are seen in this still. She may be a French Apache dancer. (If you don’t know what that is, google it.) The book was published in 1965, so the film must definitely predate that. (I have a feeling it is from the 1950s or early 1960s.) If you cannot identify the film, then perhaps you could identify the actress. Note that the picture appears as it was printed in the book and it may or may not have been reversed as if by a mirror.

Man tormented while shackled to a table

Here is a film or TV still that I am trying to identify that was unlabeled in a book. A man is shackled to a table while 3 other men stand beside him. One is pulling on his hair, one is threatening to punch him, and the other is watching this with approval. The latter man is holding a fan, which would seem to indicate that the film is set in the tropics.

Man with a woman tied to a chair

Here is a film still that I am trying to identify that was unlabeled in a book. To me it appears it’s from a film of the 1930s or even earlier. A man is either tying up or in the process of freeing a woman bound to a chair. The book was published in 1965, so the film must definitely predate that. If you cannot identify the film, then perhaps you could identify one of the actors.

Cowgirl Operating on Cowboy

Here is a film or TV still that I am trying to identify that was unlabeled in a book. A blonde cowgirl is using a large knife to operate on a cowboy, probably to remove a bullet or arrowhead. He is being held down by other cowboys. The book was published in 1965, so the film/TV episode must predate that. If you cannot identify the film/TV episode, then perhaps you could identify one of the actors.

Man in jail choking a man outside his cell.

Here is a film or TV still that I am trying to identify that was unlabeled in a book.  A man in jail is throttling someone outside his cell by reaching through the bars. By the victim’s clothing, it appears to be a western movie. The book was published in 1965, so the film/TV episode must predate that. If you cannot identify the film/TV episode, then perhaps you could identify the actors.

Shadows on the wall of a person with a whip & a woman in bed

I am trying to identify several film & TV stills in a movie book (published in the US in 1965) with unlabeled pictures from various movies, serials, and a few TV programs. I managed to identify most of the stills, but a handful have eluded me.

First is a photo probably from a 1940s-50s western showing the shadows on a wall of a woman sitting up in bed and being menaced by someone with a bullwhip.
