Man in jail choking a man outside his cell.

Here is a film or TV still that I am trying to identify that was unlabeled in a book.  A man in jail is throttling someone outside his cell by reaching through the bars. By the victim’s clothing, it appears to be a western movie. The book was published in 1965, so the film/TV episode must predate that. If you cannot identify the film/TV episode, then perhaps you could identify the actors.

  1. it does look like Frank Langella. 🙂 I don’t think the guy being choked looks at all like Marlon Brando though. He does look like he might or could be Dana Elcar, who co-starred with Langella in 1965 on the Peter Falk series “The Trials of O’Brien” in the episode ‘How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall?’. It’s Langella’s only screen credit in 1965 and he has none listed before then. I don’t know how this can be confirmed though.

    1. Thank you Foxanne and jennagain for taking a crack at solving the mystery picture. Now that Foxanne mentioned it, the choker does resemble Frank Langella. Unfortunately, his first screen credit, according to the IMDb, was in the 1965 TV episode that jennagain pointed out and the airdate was 13 Nov. 1965. I think that’s cutting it too close for a book copyrighted in 1965, considering the technology of 1965 and the bureaucratic delay in getting a copyright granted.

I checked stills from the films of Marlon Brando and he rarely wore a moustache. An exception is Viva Zapata! and his hair looks much darker than the “chokee” in the still.

I looked at Dana Elcar’s filmography and I don’t think any of his pre-1965 work includes a western and based on the way the “chokee” is dressed, I believe the film to be a western.

My first impression when I saw the photo, was that it was Cameron Mitchell choking Jack Cassidy. The IMDb shows that both actors guested on Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, and Bonanza, but not in the same episodes. However, that doesn’t exclude the possibility that at least one of them is in that still. They both did various westerns before 1965. It’s too bad the choker’s face is somewhat obscured by the bars.

I also considered that the choker may be Anthony Franciosa, but it looks like the only Western he did before 1965 was Rio Conchos and he wore a moustache in that film.

  2. Chickhabit & Mr. Unknown: Yes, I can see the resemblances and both made westerns in the right time period. Both plausible possibilities.

  3. For unknown reasons, over the years the link to the picture seems to have disappeared. I am providing the link again in case anyone is still interested. (Comment if it doesn’t work.)
