This was an animated movie that was broadcast on Cartoon Network on a Sunday following a Pirates of Dark Water episode in either 1992 or 1993, though, I do not remember if the movie was made at that time or if it was older.

My main memory of the movie was a battle between two dragons, one being the villain and the other being the protagonist’s ally and seeming very old or ancient. The good dragon was wounded and spoke to the protagonist before dying. The backdrop for this was desert and mountains.

I want to say that the protagonist was also a dragon, but I could be mis-remembering. The animation and detail was very good for the quality of the standard products of Cartoon Network at the time. The movie was in English, though, I could not tell now if it was a re-dubbed anime or if it was a European movie.
