I have been searching all over for this movie and cannot find anything to save my life. Please help!

I saw someone else watching this movie on a plane back in October (2018). Ever since then it has haunted me. Based on what I saw, I’m pretty sure the movie is about an older, bearded man who owns a record shop and a young black girl who can sing. They make music together and become friends? Throughout the movie, the man is trying to build up the girls confidence in her singing abilities and he becomes sort of a father figure. Maybe? I don’t know I couldn’t hear what was happening. Oh, and the girl hooks up with another girl at one point.

This was not an old movie! And I’m pretty sure I saw a trailer for it on YouTube once before I saw it on the plane. Thank you for your help!!
