Scene where kid leaves and sets up a contraption to play a recording

A movie from the 80s or 90s. The kid leaves his room (presumably for adventure) but doesn’t want anyone to know he’s gone. He sets up a contraption to play a recording when anyone knocks on his bedroom door. This works until the battery runs out or something and the recording gets slow and distorted. His mom hears this and opens the door to find the room empty.

I don’t think it’s Ferris Beuller’s day off. I think the contraption involved a toilet plunger.

Color. In English. Pretty sure it’s a movie and not a TV show. I feel like it was a popular movie, but can’t find anything in my searches.
