I remember watching this movie about six months ago about this father and son who move to California after his mother dies. The son starts at an expensive all boys school because his dad was friends with the headmaster. Although the boy is considered nerdy he is forced to run track and by the end of the movie loves it.  The all girls school down the road uses the boys schools facilities and the french class the boy and his love interest attend is coed. However she is bad at french so the teacher (who later starts to date the dad) has the boy tutor her. Soon the boy learns that she self harms. I don’t remember how it ended but some additional things I remember: there is a car with a backwards facing passengers seat, The mother was an artist, the father had been seeing a therapist to help him with his debilitating grief, the son yells at the father for neglecting him whilst dealing with his own pain
