Electric Board Game Scene

I’m trying to remember this movie within the last 10 years or so. All I remember is a scene near the beginning, possibly introducing one of the main characters, that involved him playing some sort of board game, possibly chess, against I think a larger fellow, maybe an alien. The pieces would electrocute the player when they made a move and the scene started when it was the opponents turn. He started by saying something along the lines that the guy would be friend if he touched the piece. He ended up winning, not sure if the opponent died or forfeit. They were in a sort of small arena/stadium with a crowd of people or aliens watching. This was only a short scene.

  1. This was the Doctor Who series 6 finale “The Wedding of River Song.” The Doctor has engaged in “Live Chess,” a barbaric, underground and illegal variant of the game where the pieces contain an electrical charge that increases with each piece lost. The Doctor, a genius and chess master, purposely pushes the game to the point where his opponent’s next move will be fatal so that he can extract information from him in exchange for conceding the game and allowing him to live. It was an uncharacteristically brutal strategy for the character which angered many fans.
