60s cheesy sci-fi horror

I saw this on television about 3 times in 1969 or 70. As a kid I loved it. It was probably black and white, but not positive. And it was in English. Anyway this science fiction horror which takes place on an island, (of course) and the creatures to be feared were about the size and shape of a Galapagos turtle shell ,and the only appendage I remember was a tall neck sticking out the top like an ostrich neck. And of course these things were multiplying and it was getting worse by the hour. Now this thing was very very slow moving, but you can damn sure bet that it was going to catch you and kill you! one guy was being attacked by it and had him by the arm, so his buddy rescued him by chopping his arm off with an ax, haha. Everyone on the island was in danger ,and of course I believe they were scientists. ……..Spoiler alert ending, now while everyone was safe and sound on the flight home ,with the creatures being eradicated, ( or so they thought ), it turns out one of these creatures had stowed away on the airplane. So now you know the whole world is going to die!. Loved it. Please help me recover this movie memory.

    1. Oh my gosh, after all these years that’s it!. Island of Terror!. Thank you so much. The silicate model is spot-on and the YouTube trailer brings back memories as well. It even has that hissing sound I remember. There is a Google image of the movie poster shows a man with the axe as well. It is in color I had the feeling it might have been in color, however almost everything I remember from that period was black and white so this was a colorful gem indeed . Now I will look forward to seeing if it is available for purchase because this is something I have wanted to see again for a long long time. Thank you again.

  1. happy to help “reunite” you with your movie. šŸ™‚ it’s a good one – has a way of staying with you even after many years. Odeon UK put out a very nice Blu-ray of Island of Terror, and I believe it is Region Free. they also released it on DVD, but i am not sure about the coding. they did a great service, as this title had been MIA since the VHS era.
