Wife buried in garden

I would appreciate any help. I watched this movie in the late 80s or early 90s. I thought on Nickelodeon but that is not certain. I lived in Florida and it was on standard cable tv. It was not a tv show add it ran for a couple hours with  commercials.  It was in color and I remember a great deal about it. The earliest part I can remember is the main kids in the movie are walking along (girl’s first or last name was MacKenzie). I believe the setting was Canada but not sure if really filmed there or if it was a Canadian broadcast. Their discussion ends up about an old man that allegedly killed and burried his wife in his garden. The boy is intrigued and snoops around the fence. He ends up getting caught by the mean-seeming old man. He ends up hiring the boy to paint his fence. He is picky about his painting since he was paying him. The boy and girl end up talking to the old man and he admits he has killed many people. Turns out it is because he is from yugoslavia and was in a war. The boy hops the fence one day and while hiding by the old man’s porch the old man drops his zippo lighter. Later we find out his wife died. (Cancer but not positive). He keeps the garden up because she loved it so much. additional details are the three main cast go fishing. The boy learns to drive (or at least drives) the old man’s car. It turns out to be a happy ending with the garden in bloom if I recall correctly. Thanks for reading.

  1. This most likely is not the correct movie, but it has some similarities. I haven’t seen it for ages, so I think I might have some of the plot elements confused with other things. “The Clubhouse Detectives” has a group of children trying to figure out what happened to their neighbor’s wife. I don’t remember if she was murdered or not, though.
