Probably 60s – 80s

I saw the film approximately 15 years ago and I ‘think’ it was playing on a classic television channel. It was in English and in color. I was quite young, so a lot of this might be fuzzy.

I only remember two details about the film. First, there is a powerful scene transition where a character – a black male – assures his lover that they will be married. Church music begins to play, seemingly signifying this marriage, but it is in fact his partner’s funeral. It really stuck with me, and it’s the only scene I’m 100% sure about.

Second, It think the film ends with the protagonist holed up in a large building – maybe a museum or bank, not sure – only to eventually exit and be shot in the street.

I think the film may have been a crime/drama, but I’m really only sure about the aforementioned scene transition. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
