Old silent black & white movie

Actually I don’t remember a lot about this movie because I saw it on tv almost 15 years ago but I think (not sure) it was a silent comedy black & white movie.
I barely remember that the main actor looked like Charlie Chaplin but he wasn’t him.
I remember two scene:
1: the main actor was poor and hungry, so he volunteered to put his face on (face in hole board) in order to eat the cake that thrown on his face by the audience.
2: he puts a balloon between his back and his jacket pretending the he is a hunchbacked ‏ but suddenly he flew because of the balloon!!

That’s all what I remember about it. Hope you help me guys 🙁
Thanx

  1. That is tough with just one scene. Let’s see if we can at least identify the comic. Could it have been Harold Lloyd as Lonesome Luke? Unlike Chaplin who wore baggy clothes, he wore clothes that were too small.

  2. I think you saw a short starring Billy West, a Chaplin impersonator who flooded cinemas with knock-off shorts made for Hal Roach. I’m not sure which of his surviving pictures you’re looking for but I’ll do a little research and see if I can find it. I’m something of a Chaplin fanatic and I feel I’ve seen the film you’re looking for.

    1. I scanned through the available Billy West films on YouTube but didn’t see the scenes you describe but there’s only a handful of his Chaplinesque films on there. :/ He does a fine impersonation! I may have seen the cake scene in a Chaplin documentary rather than in an actual short. I’ll keep my eyes open. I love silent films and I’m always poking around looking for them.
