French film

All I can remember is it was around 2009-ish, and it was on tv on Christmas day. Every single word was sung, so it was probablyan opera, or a musical or something. And I’m pretty sure it was in French. The first scene I can remember is: men and women dressed in fashions from anywhere from the 1660s to the 1810s I guess, and in a vast, grandiose ballroom. People were eating, drinking, talking (presumably in French) and dancing together. The next scene I can remember is a man running after a woman (I think he’s in love with her) in the snow. After that, all I can remember is another scene, in a bedchamber, with the woman, I think, lying on the bed -not sure if she’s hurt? Or dying?- and the man from before running in, I think duelling this other man with his sword. The film ends with the woman dying, possibly with the man dying too.

I would be so grateful if you could help me find the name of this film, it’s really special to me. Thank you so much!
