This could be something I dreamt up or a mixture of several different movies but I definitely recall as a young kid seeing a fantasy movie on TV with a scene in a ruined building with lots of fire and smoke and a deep pit full of either squids or eels that the main character is trying not to fall down. Someone or something does fall at some point and they gobble them up.

I feel it was from the 80s or early 90s and I had in my head it was related to one of the sequels to The Neverending Story but I really am not sure anymore.
