Black & White Movie Orphan kids

I saw it on tv at end of the 60s or start of the 70s, at least twice ( I was 4 or 5 years old then) and remember seeing both times the ending only. It was in English. The setting, from memory seems very 1940s maybe even 30s. Pretty sure it was part of a movie, not a tv episode. I have no titles or actors to suggest. (Would have been easy with IMDB). So the ending I remember: Two children who are orphans and apparently homeless because they are living day to day on the streets, charity or stealing here and there, afraid of being discovered by adults or authorities, finally get caught stealing something in a store (candies?) try to escape to the front door, manage to get to the street but an adult is running after them (security? store manager? clerk?). The orphans try to cross this major street, its night in heavy traffic rush, but get both? hit by a car. End up in hospital, one his in a cast crying being and comforted by a lady and a man, husband and wife (adopting couple?, relatives?) .The other orphan, brother or sister orphan, might be dead, never remembered that point.Movies in those days tended to be uplifting so doubtful one of the child is dead but can’t remember. And movie ends on that redemption from the homeless child (ren) about to go to the caring couple.

  1. If the kids are living in a park, and find a tree house type place to take shelter in, maybe you’re remembering “The Prince of Central Park.” my memories of the exact plot are very vague, but I remember a brother and sister, and both being adopted by an older woman (maybe a man too?) and some sort of a chase scene through traffic. It’s a bit later than your movie, though.

    1. It occurs to me that this movie may not actually be black and white, but that I saw it on a black and white television. Well, it’s one t eliminate, if nothing else.

    2. Bullocks! Didn’t register my reply.Disconnected. Short version then. 1977 I was old enough to remember a lot more and there are no Brooke Shileds here and definitely not 1977 as the hospital bed with the child in cast is rudimentary (bed, lamp and table). No electronic guizmos. Less set then a Marcus Welby episode. Could check for a reamake of an older version though because story seems to fit somewhat. Tv in our home were all black and white at the start of the 70s so could be color involved but can”t say. Now please register my reply!

      1. Checked older version for your Prince of Central Park but it’ss too new, originating from a Broadway play dated 1969 and nothing before that. I’m pretty sure my orphan movie was in Black and White and it is not just the tv. In other words it is definitely an early 60s movie or older, would say as far back as 40s but definitely not lower. The bicycle thief era (1948) would be my ball park guess.
