When i was a child in the 1970s i remember watching an old black and white film which im sure was British .It was about a young woman who becomes obsessed with an old Victorian (Edwardian)dress that is locked up in a glass display cabinet possibly in a museum or big house. The dress had belonged to her mother or grandmother so she feels the dress should belong to her. The young woman descends into madness and in the build up to the end of the film smashes the glass on the cabinet to take the dress. She is quickly took away and the film ends with one of her older relatives showing why she could never wear the dress and they show that the material of the old dress has become so old that its fraying even crumbling with age
