1st Post-Hope you can help!

Saw this documentary in English on cable in the USA sometime after 2000. It was about the female director trying to find a missing woman (relative?)overseas in the Middle East. Sorry I can’t remember exact country, but it was focused on women’s lack of rights there. Director travels to where missing woman was living and tries to investigate what happened. Something about the missing woman having or working in a beauty shop, having an affair and possibly being murdered by her husband’s family. The director may have been Canadian. So, after the majority of the movie, the director is somehow made to admit that the whole thing was a lie. I think it was a small scandal in the film world. Hope this rings a bell with someone. Thanks!

  1. This is just a guess…”The Amina Profile”(2015)

The film centres on Sandra Bagaria, a Montreal woman who was in an online relationship with star blogger Amina Abdallah Arraf al Omari. Bagaria became involved in the international attempt to rescue Arraf after her purported abduction by the Syrian regime.
It was revealed to be an elaborate hoax persona, an entire international community realised it had been catfished.’

    1. Gosh, thanks for the great guess, but that’s not my movie.
The director may have been the same nationality as the missing girl. Maybe late 30’s? She had dark eyes, black medium length hair, light brown skin.
At one point she visits some type of government office in the other country and speaks with an Official- maybe a doctor.
I think she talked about college in Canada -either she or missing/fake woman attended.
