Many years ago (probably early 2000’s when I watched it) when I was very young I remember this war movie I watched with my mom and never forgot. It is driving me up a wall trying to remember it! I can’t remember much other then that there where soldiers paired up with soldiers recruited from the otherwise (I think) and they HAD to protect the American soldier. Other then that the scene that I never forgot is when one of the two main soldiers of the movie comes across a little boy and gives him a chocolate bar. Returns later to find that they where blown up I believe, I think there was a big scorch mark where the boy (and mom?) Was before.
I also remember that at the end the “enemy” soldier saves his American counterparts and in an epic moment of self growth the American soldier saves the dude but takes a bullet himself. I believe he actually died but I’m not 100% on that.
Any ideas? It has been driving me nuts for years!

I don’t think thus is it, I am watching it now ro make sure. I know that I had to be pretty young, MAX 6yo and over 2 decades ago, when I watched it so I probably got some details wrong or mixed up. I know that there was distrust between the two who where paired up, but they had to work together. I also thought that the American (or what j thought of as the American) had a family, wife and kid, back home, and that is why I was so upset he sacrificed himself to save his partner. Again this is through a 5/6yo mind and over 2 decades of trying to remember.
Oh and believe there was a scene where they are all swimming. I remember I was grossed out because they where naked.
Sorry I don’t have much else other then generic war movie scenes. Smoking and bonding scene and the like.
Oh I just remembered how the ending happened. The one that had to protect the (what I think is)the American jumps in front of a bullet to save him. The American who has had trouble trusting him picks him up and carry him over his shoulders past flying bullets out of the battlefield and gets shot in the back himself, saving the guy that saved him. One of them died I believe the (I think was) the American
