I remember this one scene from a period drama where a younger woman (maybe even a teenager) was married to this old gross guy. She was in bed and she heard him coming so she quickly blew out the candle beside her bed and pretended she was sleeping. He saw the smoke rising up from the candle that had just been blown out, and grabbed her and said something along the lines of “you’re not getting out of it tonight” and proceeded to rape her. I believe afterwards he just rolled over on his side and went to sleep.
I’m pretty sure it was a very dramatic movie. Definitely a period piece – probably 17th or 18th century. It was in color, and in English. I saw it about 10 years ago. I’m pretty sure I rented it.
It might be Mesmerized (1985) starring Jodie Foster and John Lithgow.

If it helps I do remember one other thing…I believe by the end the girl was having an affair with a younger man and they decided they were going to run off together and they were talking about having sex on all the expensive things in the house and one of them said something about leaving “puddles of love” (or something along those lines) on the marble floor.
I’m pretty sure I got in in from Netflix along with Quills and Dangerous Liaisons – they were all sort of similar.

I’ve had so much going on in the past month and I’m finally getting into all my emails. I actually totally forgot about this.
I had google searched the puddles of love and nothing came up, but I just went to search through Quills and it is indeed from Quills. I forgot about that whole part of the story, so thank you ChickHabit. Even though it was far from my favorite film, and not even worth the full re-watch imo (I just fast-forwarded til I found the spot) I now have some peace of mind lol
