Movie about an island where a girl is killed on the beach for not being a virgin

This one’s frustrating. The movie came out I believe in the mid-late 70’s or very early 80’s. The main character is an author or reporter or something similar and goes to an island for a story or something. The two scenes I remember are:

1: His secretary or assistant is part of some tribe or cult and comes in with a scarf on her neck. He asks her why and she says “bites.” He says, “Oh, you mean hickeys?” and she drops the scarf to show a bunch of insect bites and says, “No, bites.”

The other scene has a local tribal girl having sex with a young man she loves on the night before her wedding to another member of the tribe. The next day at her wedding on the beach, the priest sticks his finger up her business to check her virginity and when he holds up a clean, unbloodied hand, they kill her on the spot.

I thought it had Michael Caine in it and was the movie “The Island” based on the Peter Benchley book but I’ve rewatched the movie and while some of the plot is similar, it’s not the movie I remembered. Anyone have any ideas??
