Man with Amnesia Tries to Solve Wife’s Murder

This is a color movie made somewhere between approx late 80s and 2000. It is not Momento and it is not Shattered… it is a similar plot but much more obscure in popularity, possibly a made for TV movie. As I remember the plot goes that a man wakes with amnesia to find his wife dead… I think it was a car crash but maybe someone murdered her. He is instantly the primary suspect and the movie centers around him trying piece together clues to prove his innocence. The story takes place in a small town, I think. He may have gone there after the accident/murder to escape scrutiny while the investigation is ongoing. There he finds a (I think, my memory is fuzzy) female confidante who sympathizes with him and tries to help him put his past together. All the while the sheriff of the small town is suspicious of him and plays the antagonist. The end is a great plot twist where you find out the guy you’ve been hoping would vindicate himself by proving his innocence actually did the deed.

  1. “Vanishing Act”(1986 TV movie)?

It sounds similar. It has the twist at the end where he turns out to be the killer, but he didn’t have amnesia and the lady claiming to be his wife wasn’t his wife. The woman claiming to be his wife turns out to be a cop, and it’s all a ruse to get him to confess to his wife’s murder in a car crash.

    1. I watched the trailer and I think that is it. I will watch tonight and report back. I saw it 20 years ago so my memory is mixed with imagery. I think in my mind I combined this with Shattered and that’s why I thought he had amnesia. Thanks so much for the help.

    2. “Vanishing Act” is correct. I watched it this weekend on YouTube and it is definitely correct. There is no amnesia in the plot, that was just a mix up on my part.

  2. The entire movie can be viewed on YouTube, and apparently this was a remake of an older TV movie called. “One of My Wives is Missing”? It was made in the early ’70s. There might be other versions as well.

    1. Thanks will. I did run across that movie in my searching, it has a very similar plot description, but it’s not the one. Thank you for the suggestion.
