I remember watching a cartoon on HBO(?) When I was a younger child, so I am thinking it was the early 80’s, and it was about this alien like race going about their daily lives. They seemed to live on a giant island floating in space. They harnessed giant moths/butterflies that floated and flew by to their boats. I don’t know what they did with the boats, fishing? Traveling?
I don’t remember if they did or didn’t talk, maybe I just didn’t understand what they were saying. I *DO* remember it seemed to follow the perspective of a younger child. Its father/grandpa was sick and died and the family and neighbors all gathered together mourning and ceremoniously wrapped him in sheets and carried the bundle through the village and dumped it into a well in the center of the town.
So the younger alien is understandably upset, wandering around. Life in the rest of the village returns to its previous pace. Meanwhile the bundle is falling through space twisting, turning the sheets are coming undone and a corner begins flapping. It continues falling and just before it falls out into space it turns into one of the giant moths. The boy is standing at a wall, head on his hand, crying? And the moth bursts out in front of him, hangs a moment and flies away. Was there a mother there? Did he point it out? Did he know it was the person they just lost? I don’t know, I was only 6 or 7…. It was pretty heavy stuff.
I would love to know the name of this, or if anyone else remembers it…
I would like to see it again, just to see if I remember it right….
Thanks in advance!!
