I’m pretty sure I watched this movie sometime between 95-02, although it could have been probably up until 2004ish. I know I saw it on VHS borrowed from the local library (on Oahu) and it had subtitles for English so it was definitely foreign but I’m not 100% on where from. I really feel like it was Japanese but I could definitely be wrong.
I only remember bits and pieces and have had zero luck from google, IMBD, wikipedia, and that new what is my movie search engine.
What I do remember is a young child as narrator, I think a girl, talking specifically about how bad things come in threes. I think she lived with an older couple who took her in. I believe it was a rural/country ish setting, and specifically there’s a scene involving a train going by the area where a group of young kids hang out and try to jump onto the trains for fun. At one point, one of the kids (a young boy??) gets pretty injured doing this but doesn’t die. I also remember a scene in the barn near the end where someone has come either to take the girl away or representing some other negative outcome.
Sorry this is so vague, I wish I could remember more but I literally have been trying to remember this movie for four years now and I’m getting worried that I completely made it up so any help you can give is so appreciated!!
