Saw a movie in the mid nineties, possibly on TV, in English. I seem to remember the protagonist being a tween/teen girl with an adult traveling companion (possibly her father but I don’t think so) and they go through some sort of passage to an alternate reality (this may have been after walking down a long road/train tracks). In a noir-ish city setting, they end up at a large  mansion, home to a older female relative (stepmother, aunt, something?) which is a witch or has some kind of magical powers. This woman is evil and they are trying to escape/solve some kind of mystery.

This has been stumping me for years!
