I’ve been looking for this movie for 10/15 years. I saw it on TV in the early 2000’s (French TV – Arte) and I think it was a TV movie, not a cinema movie. Although I saw it in French, I don’t think it’s a French movie, maybe a multi-national one, and it might be from the 90’s although I’m not sure.
Anyway. It starts in the 80’s, where an old man starts remembering when he was young, in Vienna, during WWII. We’re transported then and there, and most of the story is set up in a bar/restaurant owned by Jewish who are conceiling it mostly because a lot of the customers are SS soldiers. The main plot of the story is that the man plays the piano in that bar (he’s not Jewish, if memory serves) and that his music is very special and a bit magic because it runs deep into the soul of people, and especially those who made terrible things in their lives, and those people end up committing suicide; I think it becomes a strategy to kill nazis.
I can’t remember most of the movie, just that there is some kind of love triangle, and that at the end the bar is raided by the nazi because they discover that it’s owned by Jewish people, and the three main characters (the love triangle) run in the streets and I think that one or two of them get killed, but obviously not the one who plays the piano and remembers that story 40 years later. The movie ends back in the 80’s, in some sort of opera, where the protagonist starts playing the piano and I kind of remember (but maybe I’m wrong) that there is a former nazi among the spectators who ends up committing suicide (or at least it is suggested).
