Chinese Sci-Fi/Period Piece

This was a movie I watched on Hulu around 2016 that I believe was part of the Criterion Collection, but searching through their database yields nothing. To the best of my memory, it was a period piece about a little girl with mysterious origins and some kind of special powers that made her not fit in, being raised in a rural Chinese village. I believe she had loving parents who may or may not have believed she was their real daughter. Other kids saw her as some kind of freak. One of the images from the film I remember most strongly was her showing up bullies by staring at them with piercing blue eyes and intimidating them with her vibes or something. At the end, a flying saucer with lots of glowing lights shows up at night. I remember the movie being very slow and unrewarding. I wanna say it was from the early 80’s, but for all I know it could be earlier.

  1. I’ve identified this but I was wrong about several details. It’s called Princess from the Moon: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094100/

It’s Japanese (not Chinese) and it’s from the late 80’s (1987). My vague memories of the plot seem to have been pretty much correct though. In retrospect Japan would have been a much better guess if you look at the quantity of output of this kind of content from Japan vs. China, plus I’ve seen a lot more Japanese media in general, but there is a Chinese version of the folktale the movie is based on, so maybe that’s why I had China in my head. Found using IMDB advanced search function.

    1. the japan do indeed can pass for chinese and vice versa(but nothing wrong with that the women are adorable) but yes, ty for the update, i can scratch it off the mission list. where a neillion more “missions” reside 😛 and most certainly better then the “waiting on reply” entries on the notepad. rock on smootfruthie
