I have a very old memory of being in grade school, in a Catholic grade school, and they used to show these movies from time to time to the entire school. There was this one movie shown around 1972 that was animated, religious in overall content, with some broad moral story to it. All I can remember was that there was a boy and there was a tree, I think it may have been an apple tree, and I can remember some sort of garden or courtyard, and then I think the boy died in the end but somehow he was connected to Jesus, or the wood of the tree became the cross or something. I am not religious these days but I always wondered what that movie was, since it clearly made a big impact on me at a young age.
The Giving Tree is sometimes used in religious instruction and there was an animated version that came out in 1973.
