80s Movie where kids find a jeweled rose hidden in a statue.

I remember as a kid watching this movie. It would’ve been the late 80s or very early 90s. I don’t remember much but that it was on TV (probably not released in theaters) & that these kids were trying to solve some sort of mystery & at the end, they find a fancy jeweled rose hidden inside or under a statue in the town.

In my research, I found this post on another site that I’m pretty sure is the same movie:

I saw this movie when I was a kid in camp, so it’s either from the 70s, 80s, or at the very latest early 90s. A group of kids run away and take up residence in an abandoned house. They clean the place up by painting it and raking out leaves. I remember one scene in particular where one kid puts hand prints on the wall. One kid ran away by hiding in a dumpster. I think he was trying to avoid boarding school.

The only other part I remember is the end where they find a metal box under a statue with a paper rose inside. Then they discover the box has a secret bottom with a jeweled rose. There may have been some robbers were after it because I vaguely remember cops present. Sure hope you know what this is because I’m lost.”

Suggestions were Never Never Land or Camp Nowhere, but neither of these seem to be it. Thanks for any help!

  1. That may actually be it, but I cannot find that movie anywhere to watch or buy (other than those “trust us, we won’t charge your credit card” sites). I found ONE clip on YouTube, but I don’t recognize it (even though that could very well be it).

I even checked eBay for a copy.
I’m REALLY going to have to start digging in out-of-print locations for it.

    1. Wow, I’m suprised you were able to find anything! I’ve been looking too, and I didn’t even see that. I don’t remember that scene either. It’s possible I’m mixing the two up. I know I saw Never Never Land at some point, and I know I saw the film you’re describing. I thought they were one in the same, but I could be wrong, and there’s little proof to back it up because this film seems nearly impossible to find and info or clips on! I was just looking around for clues on the IMDb page and under “keywords” one of the keywords is statue, so it may be it. I really wish I could find it, because now I’d like to re-watch it as well.

  2. It’s not never never land. The second person where they are hiding away from
Boarding school is incorrect. I’ve been searching for the name of the movie as well. It’s the whole town that is getting ready for some Millenia where they can finally open the statue to get some jeweled rose that is in the towns story of how the town was created. And the lady who was rich put it there but she also likes Riddles. The day the town opens it up they find nothing. They later find out a kid stole from it that night. But all he got was some Tupperware container with a ransom note from the person who actually stole it. The detective kids go out on their own to find out who stole and find him. After being captured by the bad guy and then rescued they open it up to only find a pressed rose. Everyone is disappointed because it was supposed to be a jeweled rose. The the girl figures out the riddle on the statue said the statue must face the setting sun. The statue is facing the wrong way and the town ends up banding together and turning the statue revealing a hidden compartment and finding the jeweled rose. I don’t remember the name of the movie but I would love to know if anyone can figure it out with my lengthy story line.

  3. So just did some digging online and I figured it out. The movie is called encyclopedia brown and the case of the missing time capsule. It was a 60 minute made for tv series. The next three were only thirty minutes long and it ended as short as it was made. But that is definitely the movie with the rose and the statue. And btw camp nowhere is also one of my favorites but that is a movie where kids don’t want to go to camp so they get someone to make a fake camp so they can do what they want all summer.

    1. Wow that’s awesome! I’m glad someone finally found it. Just checked it out on YouTube and it’s definitely the moven i remember. It’s funny I totally remember watching all of the Encyclopedia Browns now, but I had completely forgotten about him. Hopefully the OP comes back to confirm cause this was a pretty awesome solve!
