60s B&W Japanese homeless man cares for small boy

Totally striking out on searching for this one. I saw it maybe 30 years ago on TV. It was a classic subdued Japanese black and white comedy about a possible homeless man who somehow ends up reluctantly caring for a young boy. They wander the cityscapes and countryside, cooking over a campfire. At one point, the man gets drunk one night. There is very little dialog, and it had subtitles. The boy wants to go some place specific, (the ocean maybe?) and the man refuses, and give in at some point. That’s all I’ve got. I hope it helps. It’s probably by some famous director in a Criterion release, but couldn’t find it anywhere.
