Maybe Jeepers Creepers? That had a flying demon.
Are you sure it was an ‘old’ movie? Because it sounds a bit like Storm of the Century which was a TV mini series based on Stephen Kings book: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storm_of_the_Century. A demonic being seeks an heir and takes a young boy to raise.
