British Horror Flick with Head in Box

Two times in my childhood while living in London I tried to watch this movie…but never made it much past the first half hour because it terrified me so much I could barely approach the TV to turn it off (this was back in the day, before remote controls!).

British horror film in black and white (I think…though I vaguely recall a green head in a box…but it was a long time ago), probably made in the 60s (I believe I first tried to watch about 1972). Older, white male British scientist and his male lab partner of approximately the same age are trying to keep brains alive after death. They have a lab in the basement of the scientist’s house.

Scientist has a daughter who attends school (college?) away from home. She brings a girl friend home for a visit, and for some reason the scientist or the assistant decide the friend’s head is a great candidate to lop off (maybe she has an accident or discovers something that requires them to kill her…can’t remember…end result is still her head in a box in the basement lab).

The assistant goes to great lengths to convince the daughter that friend returned to school via train (I believe he dresses up and goes to station). Daughter starts “dreaming” about her friend because the friend’s head is trying to communicate with her telepathically from the basement.

And that’s about as far as I got because the head in the box was just so terrifying. But now that I’m all grown up, I’d sure like to give it another whirl…third time the charm and all that. Having no luck finding anything about it online & hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. It is NOT “The Brain that Wouldn’t Die.” Thanks for your help!

    1. This was part of a double feature (along with Five Million Years to Earth – 1967) which comprised the first “adult” horror movie double feature I ever saw.
