80s Kids Movie About a Funhouse/House of Magic

My younger brother and I have been trying for YEARS to find a movie we both remember from the late 1980s or very early 1990s. It was a kids movie, very low-budget, either for TV or straight to VHS. It was available in the US, but may have been Canadian.

The plot involved a group of kids, one of whom we think was a blonde girl, following a magic rabbit into a house that turned out to be some sort of funhouse. They are unable to leave unless they answer riddles, pick doors, and follow the rabbit until they find their way out. At one point they have to choose between a series of doors, and one leads out to a stage where a magic show is happening. There is also a magician type character, who was unintentionally creepy. He sort of guides them on their way.

It was NOT the Peanut Butter Solution, but had a similar production quality.

  1. I’ve been looking for this too! The rabbit had spots, I believe, and one of the kids was named Petrie (or Demetre?). I vaguely remember sock-puppets, pies to the face, a ventriloquist, and the telling of (lame) jokes, ie: “Orange you glad I didn’t say banana,” and “Cows have bells because their horns don’t work.” Did it end with a magic show, or a stand-up routine? I feel like they needed to tell a joke to get out of the house.

  2. Oh my god, I’m so glad someone else remembers this movie. I was beginning to think that my brother and I had a shared delusion, because NO ONE remembers this one. I am 99.9% positive we rented it at the video store somewhere around 1988 or 1989, and I think it did end with a magic show. I vaguely remember the pie in the face and there were definitely a bunch of lame jokes.

I swear that I’ve Googled every combination of plots for this movie but nothing is coming up. I’ll keep you posted.

  3. Did anyone EVER figure this out? I haven’t been able to figure this out for years and it’s driving me crazy.

  4. I’m commenting in the hopes that maybe one day someone is able to name this movie. It’s been driving me insane for the past two years since I remembered it existed.
